Fowl play: Raising illegal backyard chickens

this is pretty cool. I enjoyed the video with the little kids taking care of the chickens. LOL

Backyard chickens are everywhere. But in many North American cities, keeping a flock of hens is still illegal. We met up with some unlikely outlaws while traveling through Tennessee who are breaking the law by producing fresh farm eggs in their backyards.

Our county only allows chickens if you have two acres or more ... You would have to be very wealthy to afford that much land around here, plus an hoa can forbid chickens as well, I'm sure. Add it to the long list of reasons to move farther out as soon as husband retires ...

How many dogs are allowed?
(not kidding)

During "The Great Depression," many people raised rabbits.

Survival trumps politics.
Network to CSAs (community-supported-agriculture).
If you can't find one, build one.
"Taking heat" can also rally "awakened" neighbors.

You can probably raise crickets without anyone knowing much
(also not kidding).

Get ready to make and find and preserve food.

Re: Fowl play: Raising illegal backyard chickens

Foster ... am I correct that you are suggesting I use dogs for food? If so, all I can say is that I am not willing to discard certain aspects of my culture and my own personal definition of "civilization" ... I know that others in this world eat dog, but I do not. Nor do I eat horses. My dog has a name and is a family member. Would I allow my child to starve by not eating the dog? Well, that is just not a situation I anticipate dealing with given my views of how collapse is most likely to proceed. So I obviously can't state for certain what I would do under various scenarios, but I certainly would not PLAN on such a thing. Nor would I take SpockLives' suggestion that I take my dog out into the woods and shoot him just to toughen myself up for what's coming. Nor will I stop using deoderant as suggested by MegaDoom ... although that one is certainly in a different category than the others.

I respectfully submit that each of us needs to maintain a certain level of humanity even during desperate times. Otherwise, surviving would be a worse outcome than the alternative.

Re: Fowl play: Raising illegal backyard chickens

Yeah, let's stride into apocalypse treading a stately measure.

Actually it's a good point, I want to enter the collapse as a steward of courteous manners. My great grand children might subsist on rodents or insects but they'll know which fork to use.

VA M, I found a recipe for home made deodorant in one of my notebooks: equal parts of baking soda and corn starch with whatever available vegetable oil there is, as a binder.
We must become the change we want to see in the world.
